Rule 20DA 12V Submersible Bilge Pump — Non-Auto, 800 GPH, 3/4" Thread
Review
What’s included and key specs:
The unit is supplied as a complete submersible bilge pump assembly with a 3/4" (19 mm) threaded discharge port, integrated check valve, and an internal thermal cut-off to protect against overheating. This non-automatic model runs on 12V and is rated at approximately 800 gallons per hour (GPH). Rule offers similar pumps across a range of capacities—from about 360 GPH up to 1100 GPH—and in 12V and 24V variants.
Construction and performance:
The pump is built with a durable thermoplastic housing and corrosion-resistant components designed for the marine environment, paired with an advanced impeller that preserves flow without raising amperage. It is designed to deliver near full-rated flow at 12 volts rather than requiring higher input voltage. Hidden venting reduces the chance of air lock in difficult plumbing runs, keeping the unit operating continuously when submerged.
Installation and use:
Installation is straightforward thanks to the threaded 3/4" discharge that accepts common bilge hose fittings; however, this non-auto version needs a panel or float switch for automatic operation (switch not supplied). The low amperage draw makes it suitable for battery-powered systems, while the built-in check valve lessens backflow and the thermal cut-off prevents damage from overheating. Regular maintenance is easy due to the pump’s service-friendly design.
Pros
- High 800 GPH capacity at 12V
- Built-in thermal cut-off and check valve
- 3/4" threaded discharge for easy hookup
Cons
- Non-automatic — requires external switch
- Check valve can hinder flow in some plumbing layouts
- Warranty documentation may be missing from some packages
VerdictThe Rule 20DA is a dependable, high-capacity non-automatic bilge pump ideal for boat owners who want a powerful 12V removal solution with low current draw. It provides full-rated flow at 12 volts thanks to an optimized impeller design, and includes safety features such as a thermal cut-off and a check valve to limit backflow. Its 3/4" threaded discharge and corrosion-resistant construction make in

Replacement for unreliable original
After our original pump faltered during an on‑water engine problem I lost trust in it. This updated 800 GPH Rule unit fit exactly where the factory pump sat, installed without issues and pumped well during driveway testing. Reasonably priced and I hope it outlasts the prior version.

Quiet operation
Runs quietly and performs well. Haven’t had it long enough to judge lifespan.

Worked until the check valve caused trouble
Initial tests were fine, but on a second attempt the pump wouldn’t remove water. I cleared the line thinking it was blocked, then remembered the check valve. Removing the valve fixed the issue and subsequent pump-outs worked normally. Seems the valve sometimes resists back pressure the pump can’t overcome.
