Roll of 40 Dateless Buffalo Nickels (1913–1938)
Review
This listing is for one roll containing forty Buffalo nickels struck during the series run from 1913 through 1938. Each coin is made from the standard composition for the issue: 75% copper and 25% nickel. Individual coins measure about 21.2 millimeters across and weigh roughly 5.0 grams.
The Indian head on the obverse and the standing bison on the reverse were sculpted with relatively high relief around the date field. In many circulation examples that raised detail wore away quickly, producing the familiar dateless varieties offered here. Those worn-date pieces have long been reclaimed by collectors, artisans and jewelers for their visual character.
These coins are commonly repurposed: carvers have turned many into hobo nickels and engraved pieces, while others are incorporated into buttons, belt buckles, money clips and other accessories. They also serve as starter lots for collectors who appreciate the design and historical context of early 20th-century U.S. coinage.
Pros
- Authentic 1913–1938 Buffalo nickel composition and design
- Excellent source material for carving, jewelry, and crafts
- Iconic imagery with strong historic and decorative appeal
Cons
- Many pieces have missing or worn dates
- Condition and wear will vary across the roll
- Occasional packing or count discrepancies may occur
VerdictIf you want genuine Buffalo nickels for crafting, display or collection, a roll of 40 dateless pieces offers authentic material and period charm. The high-relief date area meant many of these coins lost their numerals through circulation, which makes them especially attractive for artists and makers. Condition varies and counts should be checked on arrival, but the lot provides a ready supply of h
