Review
Play as Edward Kenway, a swashbuckling captain who commands the Jackdaw and carves a path between assassins and templars. The package is the physical PS5 edition delivered on a Blu-ray disc inside a standard plastic game case, with printed insert materials; a downloadable patch is expected to apply post-install. The game installs to your console’s storage and integrates with PS5 features for performance or fidelity modes.
Melee and stealth systems have been overhauled to favour responsive parries, varied takedowns, and smoother parkour transitions. Ship-to-ship fighting has been expanded: the Jackdaw can be upgraded across multiple categories and now offers alternate fire options and enhanced naval mechanics for more tactical encounters on the open sea.
The open world spans sunlit islands, dense tropical jungles, and storm-tossed waters rendered on a modern engine. Visual upgrades include ray-traced reflections and lighting, while spatial audio support such as Dolby Atmos improves immersion. Environmental effects like weather, waves, and underwater wrecks are emphasized to enhance exploration.
This edition also adds new narrative material and extras beyond the original campaign: fresh story missions that expand arcs for fan-favorite pirates, three new officer characters tied into the main plot, additional sea shanties, companion pets, and a photo mode. Quality-of-life refinements address longstanding pain points to make both returning and new players’ runs smoother.

This remaster reminded me why I love the original: open-world sailing, ship upgrades, and treasure hunts remain addictive. The PS5 build runs well and the improved visuals—especially ocean and weather effects—heighten the atmosphere. Edward’s arc kept me invested the whole way through.
